businesses accept that a uni-processor system is adequate for running many entry level server applications. But they also recognize that the typical uni-processor system, made for the desktop, cannot deliver the level of data protection, I/O bandwidth, and manageability that is required for servers and network appliances. In response, Intel offers the Intel® Entry Server Board SE7210TP1-E for uniprocessor server systems without compromise.

INTEL DX48BT2 MOTHERBOARD
INTEL DX48BT2 EXTREME SERIES MOTHERBOARD
The current BIOS versions for the two models are the same, at 1521, and the various driver versions are also identical so you can read the DX38BT review to get the low-down on the layout of the DX48BT2. The short version is that it’s very neat and tidy with support for DDR3 memory and triple PCI Express 2.0 graphics slots with CrossFire but you don’t get legacy connectors such as PS/2 ports or a connector for a floppy drive.
As the single new feature with the DX48BT2 is the 1600MHz support for memory and front side bus that’s what we’ll concentrate on, starting with the Core 2 Extreme QX9650 processor.
This is a quad-core that runs at 3.00GHz on a 1,333MHz front side bus. With most makes of motherboards you can set the memory speed independently of the front side bus but Intel doesn’t make life so easy. By default our OCZ PC3-1600 Titanium ran at 1,066MHz and once we fed it the extra voltage that it needed we could run it at 1,333MHz without any problem. The performance varied slightly from previous tests that we ran on the DX38BT when the memory speed had been limited to 1,066MHz but the differences were relatively tiny.
Well, the time has finally come for Intel to wade in with its DX48BT2 motherboard which in essence is a DX38BT with the addition of support for 1,600MHz DDR3 memory and that all important 1,600MHz front side bus. The obvious comment here is ‘about time too’ but things aren’t quite that simple. Over the past few months it has become clear that Intel has no plans to release any more Core 2 processors on the faster front side bus before the arrival of Nehalem in Q4. This means that the QX9770 wasn’t the start of something wonderful but is to all intents and purposes a reviewer’s special - well would you spend £1,000 on one? - so the processors that you are interested in supporting should be a 45nm Penryn Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad running on a 1,333MHz front side bus.
Placing the DX38BT and DX48BT2 side-by-side I cannot see a single difference between the two motherboards. Of course you’d expect the two models would be very similar and in many ways that’s no bad thing as the layout of the DX38BT is pretty good but there are more oddities yet to come. Take the five passive coolers on the voltage regulators as an example. Intel picks them out on the product brief as having new and improved designs but they look the spitting image of the coolers used on the DX38BT. It’s possible that Intel has changed the material that it used for the coolers but I’m prepared to go out on a limb and say that they are the same.

Intel Menlow Powered GPS Enabled MIMD Slider UMPC
Previously known as Elektrobit, EB have showcased their sleek new UMPC which not only comes with inbuilt GPS and HSDPA but is also one of the first devices to be based on Intel’s new Menlow platform – utilising the Silverthorne processor and Poulsbo chipset – which promises greatly enhanced battery performance in comparison to comparable systems.
Details are a little thin on the ground at the time of writing. However, what is known is that EB’s Linux based UMPC is tagged as being a Mobile Internet Media Device (MIMD) and is designed to be ‘pocketable’ whilst featuring an impressively proportioned 4.8 inch touchscreen LCD and a full QWERTY keyboard thanks to its slider design.
There’s also no word on pricing or expected availability at this time but, rest assured, the moment full specifications concerning the head turning EB UMPC are published we’ll be posting them right here (along, we hope, with some jaw dropping imagery).

Intel drops some official news on the 2go PC
We’ve finally run across some solid-looking information about that highly-rumored portable notebook coming from Intel. The small education-targeted computer will be named 2go PC and comes with a very decent set of features including an Intel Celeron M processor and 512 MB of memory (upgradable to 1GB).
If you look close you can make out the details in the spec sheet after the jump, but to save you some eye strain some of the notable features include overall dimensions of 8.7″x7.3″x1.5″, a 9″ LCD (840×480), 40GB 4200RPM HDD, 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi, a SDMMC memory card reader, integrated 30fps camera and it runs Windows XP and has support for Linux. This notebook is sure to take a bite out of Negroponte and the OLPC laptop in at least some markets. Although the XO laptop has yet to reach it’s $100 price tag goal, it does sell for less than the expected $400 on Intel’s 2go PC, and is more adapt for outdoors and remote locations. Non third-world classrooms however are sure to take a liking to this one. The notebook is manufactured by CTL and is expected to be on shelves before the end of May.New Intel UMPC known as Erath
This is Intel’s new UMPC which has been named Intel Erath, introduced at Computex 2007 and with not many details to go on we can tell you that this portable computer has a 5.6″ display that can swivel, a QWERTY keyboard and the battery life will be very good thanks to Intel’s new low power architecture silicon inside.
The Details On Intel’s Centrino 2
Intel has officially launched the Centrino 2 platform. Shipping from today, it consists primarily of a 45nm Penryn Core 2 Duo processor running from 2.26GHz to 3.06GHz, with a 6MB L2 cache and a 1066MHz front side bus.
The chipset has integrated WiFi-N and Graphics which would be augmented with WiMax support later this year. The biggest boone Intel claims is that the Centrino 2 platform offers 23% more performance at 23% less power as well as 70% faster graphics.
Two key features of the Centrino 2 platform are HUGI (Hurry Up and Get Idle) and VPro, which would let system administrators remotely control laptops via wireless even when the laptop is sleeping.
Intel’s Vice President of Mobile Platforms, Mooly Eden, explained that the new platform is all about HUGI.
He stated that the optimum state a mobile processor should be in is sleep mode “just like his wife”. HUGI allows the processor to be woken up when a task comes along, and put back to sleep rapidly once its done. Providing tremendous power savings.
In addition, the chipset would also support dynamic switching between the integrated graphics package and a standalone graphics card to save battery life. ATI is already producing graphics cards for the platform and nVidia will shortly.
Both consumer and enterprise offerings will have full support for dual channel DDR3 memory and Blu-Ray playback.
